Cleaning & Polishing

After discussing your medical history and advising your dentist of any recent changes in your health, it’s time to start your dental check-up. Beginning with cleaning and polishing, the dental assistant or hygienist will use what is called a hand scaler to scrape and remove any tartar and plaque build-up on your teeth. This will take a couple of minutes and will finish with a tooth polisher that will remove any remaining plaque, stains or residue and make your teeth feel smoother.

Examination

Now that your teeth are clean, your dentist will examine the state of your teeth, gums and inside of your mouth to determine if there are any problems. This could be anything from a cavity to early signs of oral cancer. To do so, your dentist will use a small mouth mirror to get a better view of the sides and back of your teeth. If any visible problems are detected, your dentist will recommend a treatment plan or may refer you to a specialist for further treatment.

X-rays

Dependant on your oral history and exam results, your dentist may decide that a dental x-ray is required. Because x-rays expose you to radiation, it is recommended that if you have any previous copies, you bring them when visiting a new dentist.
